Over 100 years IBM - Visualizing our Future by Examining our Past

On June 16th, 1911, the Computing, Tabulating and Recording company was founded –setting up what is modern IBM Corporation today. 100 years is a remarkable milestone to reach – however we don’t view this moment in time only as an occasion to celebrate our past. Instead, we are looking ahead, and we’re thinking about what our 100-year history tells us about our company, and our world today, and tomorrow.

When you look across IBM’s history, you see that we have always thought about the future and collaborated with clients and communities to make things work better and to build a better future. That’s why the work we do is so relevant to the challenges we face today.

Pioneering in the Science of Information

Over a century, IBM has been a leader in science, in business and in society. It pioneered computation and the science of information. Its innovations helped to create a new organizational form – the modern corporation. And in so many ways our company has literally changed the way the world works.

IBM engineers and scientists invented many of the building blocks of modern information technology, including the memory chip, the mainframe, the personal computer and even new fields of mathematics.

Reinventing the modern corporation.

IBM’s business innovations-from progressive workforce policies, to new ideas of societal responsibility, to global engagement, to the deliberate creation of corporate culture—shaped the modern corporation.

IBMers have aimed to build this new kind of organization and to sustain it over time – reinventing ourselves many times, and helping our clients do the same.
